My name is Emily Meyer and I attended the gallery opening for Mr Watanabe last Thursday night. As an artist, I was craving the company of creative individuals. Even though communication was difficult (okay, almost impossible!), I felt that I was in a room of like-minded people with imagination and creativity oozing from their pores! It was invigorating! Mr Watanabe's paintings, though, were definitely the highlight of the evening. The beautifully rendered faces of the children together with their sketchy, unfinished bodies brought to mind the frescos of days gone by. The nuetral tones of browns and grays made the flashes of color outstanding! I especially loved seeing the "inner workings" of various objects in the paintings, such as being able to see inside the carousel horse, or the wires and accoutrements under the table. Mr Watanabe has obviously mastered the ability to render realistically. He has moved beyond that ability, using it along with a delightful freedom of the brush. With these works, he has allowed his own inner spirit to guide his hand in manipulating paint and form. The amazing amount of value and volume in all the forms dazzled my eyes! I am honored to have seen these works, and to have been invited to the fun party. Thank you to Mr Kubo and Mr Wakabayashi for escorting me around and making me feel welcome! Thank you to Haruyo Shiwa for being so kind to me and inviting me to the party! I hope to be a part of the Hokkaido art scene and add my own little sensibilities to an already rich culture of artists! |
